Re-claim the Center | Monastery Tower in Florence

Site Plan

Site Plan

This project is the design of a contemporary monastery in the heart of ancient Florence. The monastery will be built in the Piazza del Carmina, on the south side of the River Arno. The Piazza del Carmine has for years been used as a parking lot, and an important part of the project brief is the design of the ground plane as a publically accessible space of the monastery, which provides access to the sanctuary. Leaving the largest part of the piazza open, the monastery  will take the form of a square, vertical tower, similar to the dozens of medieval towers that remain in Florence, embedded in buildings.
